How can I embed recent topics on my homepage?

Suggestions for improving the site.

I've updated lasttopics.php and lasttopics.html in the code post to sort the topics by most recent post, not start topic date, and to output the date of the last post.

Because the code was already here and you linked here from phpBB.com. Besides, it's not like anybody else is participating in that topic any longer.'

I will post there letting them know I've updated the code here, though.

Have you tried using the old HTML CENTER tags or the newer CSS equivalents in the HTML template files?

Anyway, this isn't really a Web site design help forum. I just worked on the above code as a favor to show you that it could be done and to get you started in the right direction. I don't use it and don't plan to support it. I've already put hours into this (and I normally get $30+ an hour for consulting), so it's time for you to learn how to tailor it for your specific needs.
