Access WM Device using a drive letter over Active Sync

Postby mpg187 » Tue Dec 15, 2009 3:49 pm

When I use my phone is ActiveSync mode it does not get a drive letter, so I cannot access files on it directly from programs. For example, when I want to back it up I use Beyond Compare.

Is there a way I can access it directly from programs?

To map your device as a disk drive, you need something that makes it appear as a USB Mass Storage device, like WMStorage (freeware) or Softick Card Exporter.

I've never used either, but they may only work for files on memory cards (WMStorage may allow access to the entire device, but I'm not sure).

I also think some newer devices come with the ability to work as USB Mass Storage devices. For example, my Samsung Omnia includes a USB Connection Mode settings applet that allows exporting the memory card or 8 GB internal flash storage (but not the main device memory) as a drive.

P.S. How do you use Beyond Compare to back things up? Do you just sync folders or something? (I use BC 3 at work a lot, and have UltraCompare at home.)

I use BC2 and set the source and destination on each side and sync.

My HTC has a USB Mass Storage mode, but when I use it I cannot tether, or use MyMobiler to connect to it. Plus I like that ActiveSync makes you authenticate, if I leave my phone in USB mode if someone stole my phone all they would have to do is plug it in and they would have access to my files.

Well, it's an either/or situation, I guess. You can't have everything. ;)

Maybe those USB modes need to automatically revert to normal mode when disconnected. Of course, you could also encrypt your sensitive files or store things in an eWallet. Finally, you can use a broadcaster to find your phone and a remote wipe utility (Microsoft's My Phone allows both).

What do you mean by an eWallet?

If I would encrypt my files would I still be able to access them on my computer?

An electronic "wallet", used to store things like credit card numbers, passwords, etc. I use Ilium eWallet, but there are others.

That depends on the encryption software. Resco Explorer allows encrypting files and has a desktop component, so you should be able to encrypt in one place and decrypt in another.

Even so it would be a hassle to constantly encrypt and decrypt files. I use PocketRAR on important files already and wouldn't someone still be able to format it? Oh yeah and I would need something that worked with Linux...

I used to use Mocha FTP Server and Beyond Compare to that, but it doens't work if I am using My Mobiler for some reason...
