Windows Embedded CE 6.0

Postby mpg187 » Thu Jan 21, 2010 3:54 pm

https://www.dreamspark.com/Products/Pro ... wsignin1.0

I have access to a Microsoft Site called Dreamspark that offers free downloads to students (I got Server 2003 Standard Edition there) and I see Windows Embedded CE 6.0

Is this Windows CE for x86 again? Is MS making CE for x86?

Is this a download for a tool to develop for Windows Embedded CE 6.0, the OS itself or both? Is MS putting CE back on x86 just for development and testing for mobile phones?

Why would someone put Windows CE on a x86 computer when they could have put Windows 9x on?

It sounds like it's the OS. Windows CE can run on several processors, but I don't know if one is the x86 (it wouldn't surprise me, though).

Maybe the x86 system is a device with no hard disk and limited storage. Maybe it's a real-time device. Who knows?

P.S. I've moved this to the thread you created about it. I don't see how Windows CE on the x86 relates to Windows Phone.

In that thread you were talking about the history of Windows Mobile:

Just for historical interest, Microsoft came out with Windows CE back in 1997 or so. It ran mostly on Handheld PCs (clamshell landscape devices with QWERTY keyboards; you can see a couple that I used to have on my History page). The OS was a lot like Windows 95, with a Start button, task bar and system tray at the bottom of the screen, a real desktop, a menu bar at the top of the screen and so on.

There you were talking about Windows CE for x86

Actually, I wasn't. There's no reference to x86 there at all. The first Handheld PCs that I know of ran on the MIPS and Hitachi SH processors, not the x86.

Anyway, I only talked about the history because you asked about Pocket PC vs. Windows Mobile, so I thought you might want to know where those came from. Windows CE 6.0 is well beyond anything there, and isn't even on any Windows Phones yet, which is why I moved that post here.
