Windows Phone?

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/ ... fault.mspx

On the MS Site under Products "Windows Phone" is listed and goes the the page above. The URL says windowsmobile (maybe not to cause 404 errors with all the pages there) but this image appears:

Are they changing the name of WM?

They changed it with the release of Windows Mobile 6.5.

Then wouldn't it be called Windows Phone 6.5?

What's the deal with Pocket PC and Windows Mobile?

My iPAQ has Pocket PC 2003 but my phone has Windows Mobile 6.5

Was there a Windows Mobile 2003? I think I have an old iPAQ with that (or was it WM 2002?)

I think people (other than maybe those in Microsoft) use them interchangeably.

The Pocket PC OS came out sometime in 2000. It followed the less-than-successful Palm-Sized PC version of Windows CE. In 2002 or so, Microsoft released the Smartphone OS, which didn't use touchscreens. In 2003, I think Microsoft wanted to make people understand they were two very similar systems, so they came out with Windows Mobile, which had Pocket PC, Pocket PC Phone and Smartphone versions. Starting with Windows Mobile 6, they renamed those to Windows Mobile Classic, Windows Mobile Professional and Windows Mobile Standard, respectively.

Just for historical interest, Microsoft came out with Windows CE back in 1997 or so. It ran mostly on Handheld PCs (clamshell landscape devices with QWERTY keyboards; you can see a couple that I used to have on my History page). The OS was a lot like Windows 95, with a Start button, task bar and system tray at the bottom of the screen, a real desktop, a menu bar at the top of the screen and so on.

To compete better with Palm, Windows CE 2.1 (I think) supported the traditional portrait PDA form factor and the devices were called Palm-Sized PCs. It also had a Windows 95 style UI, but added a virtual keyboard (SIP) in the task bar area. Given the portrait orientation, the task bar was very crowded, especially with the SIP there, too. To make the form factor more usable, Microsoft created the Pocket PC shell that ran on top of Windows CE.

There was a Windows Mobile 2003; technically, your iPAQ had it, not Pocket PC 2003. People called it Pocket PC 2003, but I don't believe Microsoft ever called it that (unless you saw that in some obscure About screen or something). I had an iPAQ 5550 with Windows Mobile 2003 (unfortunately, it won't power up, so I can't check the About screens).
